Florida State University is a space-grant and sea-grant public university located in Tallahassee, FL. It is a comprehensive doctoral research university with medical programs and significant research activity as determined by the Carnegie Foundation. The university consists of 15 separate colleges and 39 centers, facilities, labs and institutes that offer more than 300 programs of study, including professional programs.

The Center for Intensive English Studies (CIES) at Florida State University CIES' mission is to teach English to international citizens from all parts of the world. That is why CIES is known as the school "where the world comes to learn English." Founded in 1980, CIES has educated thousands of students who strengthened their English language skills to: prepare for full-time study at English-speaking universities; prepare for successful careers that required English fluency; return to their countries with strong English skills.

Participants:

The instructional program at CIES is designed to help students who are seriously interested in learning English.The curriculum is designed for students who have a basic knowledge of English, but whose ability is not yet strong enough for successful university studies or business/professional communication. Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced (pre-university) levels of English instruction are offered each semester. Each level offers a minimum of 24 hours of classes each week. Total emphasis is placed on real learning in small language classes under the guidance of master teachers of English as a second language. In every seven-week session, students take one course from each of the following five skills: Listening; Speaking; Reading; Composition; Grammar in Use.
