University of Iowa was founded in 1847. Now, it is composed of 11 colleges, the largest of which is the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, enrolling most of Iowa's undergraduates. More than 30,500 students enroll at Iowa each year. Some 60 percent come from Iowa, 24 percent from adjoining states, and 8 percent from the remaining states. International students from 113 countries make up 7 percent of the University's enrollment.

Participants:

The Iowa Intensive English Program offers four courses: Reading, Writing, Grammar and Communication Skills. (Students on F-1 visas must take all four.) Classes are 50 minutes long.

English as a Second Language Credit Classes are available to students whose first language is not English—U.S. as well as international students. International undergraduate students admitted to The University of Iowa with a TOEFL iBT score less than 100 (600/250, paper/computer) are required to complete an English Proficiency Evaluation (EPE) before their first registration for classes. Some graduate departments may require students to complete an English Proficiency Evaluation regardless of their TOEFL score. U.S. citizens and permanent residents whose first language is not English may be required to take the English Proficiency Evaluation as part of the Orientation and Registration program. Students are required to complete any ESL coursework specified as a result of the English Proficiency Evaluation. Courses are offered in conversation skills, pronunciation, grammar, reading, and writing. Students must be enrolled in The University of Iowa in order to take ESL credit classes.

Teaching Assistant Preparation in English (TAPE) Program.
To participate in this program, students must be enrolled in a graduate program at The University of Iowa, and an academic department must be considering hiring them as teaching assistants.

An English Class for Iowa Students and Employees. Every semester, the Iowa Intensive English Program offers a course entitled Communication Skills for Professionals. It is only available to people who are already in the U.S., as we are not able to issue immigration documents for this course. Please visit the link above to learn more about this class.

Free ESL Classes for Student Spouses. Every summer, free classes in English as a Second Language are offered to spouses and other adult family members of University of Iowa students. Classes concentrate on speaking and listening, though help with other aspects of English is also available. Each class period is approximately one hour. Speakers of all ability levels are welcome. No daycare is provided. Classes are taught by University of Iowa graduate students who have completed specialized training in ESL.

ESL Tutors. The ESL Programs Office maintains a list of tutors who are specially certified to teach English as a second language. Private tutoring is $25 per hour. Please check with the ESL
