Study English

University of South Dakota

South Dakota
57069 414 E. Clark Street
(605) 677.5977

The University of South Dakota was founded in 1862. The University has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1913 and is an active member of the Land Grant Colleges. Today the school enrolls 9,291 students.

English as a Second Language (ESL) at The University of South Dakota helps students learn or improve English skills. Classes are small, so students are assured of having much opportunity to practice their English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Many individuals - undergraduate students as well as doctoral candidates - serve as tutors, instructors and mentors in the ESL program.

The primary focus of each of the following course offerings is to allow each student to have as much time for individualized learning as possible.  Many students wish to spend one or two semesters working to improve their English skills before taking regular university classes.

Students are also able to work with language center self-study materials either in the library or through the Writing Center. As students become more advanced in their English skills, they are encouraged to enroll in courses which, though not specifically a part of the ESL Program, certainly address ESL concerns. Such classes include, but are not limited to:
- Grammar
- English Literature
- Creative Writing
- Advanced Composition
- Business Writing
- Fundamentals of Speech.
Each course consists of 1-4 credit hours.

Around $660 per 1 credit hour.
