DePaul University was founded in 1898, by the Congregation of the Mission (or Vincentian) religious community, which follows the teachings of 17th century French priest St. Vincent de Paul. The University uses the quarter system of class scheduling, offers more than 260 undergraduate and graduate programs of study. The English Language Academy (ELA) offers English courses and activities that meet the personal and professional goals of our international students. The ELA is a full-time intensive language program focused on the language and academic skills used in university degree programs. Its classes are small, usually from 10 to 17 students, and they are taught by expert instructors. Usually, ELA students work in one level for the entire term-10 weeks in Fall, Winter or Spring; 8 weeks in Summer-before passing to the next level. In the ELA, your level is decided by placement tests given at the beginning of your first term. These tests generally include an Institutional TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and a writing sample.
