Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm (now Iowa State University) was officially established in 1858. Today, Iowa State University is a comprehensive research university of international stature with nearly 27,000 students from all 50 states and 105 other nations. The school is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a Member of the North Central Association.

The English Department offers international undergraduate and graduate students advanced courses to support academic English skills. Five courses are currently offered: Listening Strategies for Non-native Speakers of English, Reading Strategies for Non-native Speakers of English, Academic English I (for undergraduate and graduate students), Academic English II (for undergraduate students), Academic English II (for graduate students)

Intensive English and Orientation Program is a complete, full-time program in spoken and written American English. It emphasizes the language skills students need for successful university study in the United States, including: speaking in classroom discussions; taking notes from lectures; reading efficiently; writing clearly and communicating with people on and off campus. An important aspect of the program is for students to learn about the people and customs of the United States.
