Eastern Kentucky University was founded in 1906. The School remains responsive and flexible in order to serve in unique and needed ways. Within its statutory responsibilities, EKU seeks to provide intellectual and cultural opportunities that will develop habits of scholarship and intellectual curiosity, provide a deep understanding of American democracy and the citizen's role in maintaining its strength and vitality, impart an understanding of humans and their aspirations, enable effective and efficient communication, and prepare productive and responsible citizens.

Participants:

The EKU English Language Instruction Program (EELI) offers an intensive program of English as a Second Language to non-native speakers of English. It emphasizes academic, real English used interactively as much as possible. The Program prepares students for study in American colleges and universities and is open to all students wishing to improve their English skills for personal, academic, and professional purposes. Classes cover all the important English language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and include extensive orientation to American lifestyles and culture. EELI participants may live on campus in University residence halls and benefit from a number of supportive services, including cross-cultural activities and educational excursions.

The Program offers five levels of instruction from beginning to advanced. Five sessions (with each session being seven weeks long) are available each year: Spring I (January -early March), Spring II (late March-early May), Summer (June-July), Fall I (August-early October), Fall II (late October-early December). The EELI program requires 26 weekly hours of instruction and offers the possibility of more than 45 hours of interactive English opportunities each week. A Tutoring Lab, cross-cultural activities, and enrichment activities are important parts of the program.
