Murray State University is a tax-supported institution, which consists of five academic colleges and a school of agriculture. The School is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate, Bachelor's, Master's, and Specialist degrees. MSU offers 2 certificates, 11 associate, 68 bachelor’s and 42 master’s and specialist programs. The total enrollment to the University is 10,022 students.

The ESL Program at Murray State University emphasizes language proficiency in all skill and knowledge areas (speaking, listening, writing, reading, and grammar) and provides students with an overview of American culture. Its typical student has completed secondary school at home and is preparing to enter college. The average ESL class contains 10-12 students, making it possible for students to receive personal attention from the instructors - an environment well-suited for student success.

The ESL Program curriculum is divided into six levels. Each level (Beginning Proficiency, Intermediate Proficiency, Advanced Proficiency) generally requires an eight-week term to complete.

There are also some special programs:
- Tailored Programs with an International Theme – with an international focus or for international visitors can be arranged on a contractual basis and tailored to meet the needs of the group. Preferred program lengths would range from two to six (2-6) weeks with a maximum of 25 individual participants.

- English Language Instruction for Special Groups. In addition to a full program of English language instruction available throughout the year at specific dates, the Institute offers highly flexible programs for groups at times convenient to the group. Although summer is the most often requested period, groups are not limited to this time of year. It is recommended that interested groups contact the Institute at least six months prior to the time they wish to participate. Programs may consist of standard courses in conversation, reading, writing, and grammar, or they may include an array of subjects that can include (but are not limited to): English for specific purposes; English for teachers; Teacher education; Technical writing; Business English; Legal Terminology; Pronunciation training; English for public speakers; Intensive conversation; Introduction to American culture.

- Services to those working with English as a Second Language.
