The University of Southern Maine was founded in 1878. USM is a major educational force in the overall growth and improvement of the economic, civic, social, and cultural fabric of southern Maine. The USM serves its 10,000 plus students.

Participants:

English for Speakers of Other Languages. The Program is accredited by the American Association of Intensive English Language Programs (AAIEP). 22 hours of instruction per week. Small classes. ESOL courses (except TOEFL Preparation) are taught as part of USM's regular academic semester program and are offered in the fall and spring semesters as well as in the summer session.  Students receive University academic credit for all semester classes, from 3.0 to 1.5 credits per class. The shorter summer courses grant 1.0-1.5 credits. 

The English Language Bridge (ELB) program is an academic support program for nonnative English speakers who have met USM’s admission requirements except that their TOEFL or SAT scores fall below the required level. All ELB students meet with an academic advisor to select courses which offer key elements to aid in that student’s academic success.
