St. Cloud State University was founded in 1869. Students choose from more than 200 majors, minors and pre-professional programs, including regional rarities such as aviation, meteorology and geographic information systems. The total enrollment to the school is 16,998 students with more than 1,100 international students from about 80 nations.

The Intensive English Center (IEC) at Saint Cloud State University (SCSU) is an intensive English program (IEP) which began offering classes in the fall of 1997. It is designed to provide quality language instruction to international students who wish to improve their English language skills while learning about American culture and customs. Courses are offered at five levels from beginner to advanced and consist of 23 hours of instruction per week. The curriculum emphasizes the development of basic skills that are fundamental to academic success or professional advancement, such as reading, writing, grammar, listening comprehension and speaking. It also includes cultural orientation, oral presentation, pronunciation, discussion, and computer technology. Classes are taught by professionally trained instructors with advanced degrees in teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language.
