        Portland State University was founded in 1946. The total enrollment of students is up to 25,000. PSU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges & Universities. The University offers 67 bachelor's, 61 master's, 13 doctoral degree programs.
 
Participants:
        Intensive English Language Program (IELP) offers intensive, academic-based English language (ESL) classes for: International students; Adults and professionals; International visitors (including visiting faculty and spouses); Members of Portland's international and immigrant communities and those who: want to improve their English for travel, work, or international communication, want to attend college or university in the USA, are admitted or "conditionally" admitted to PSU, are on study abroad programs at PSU.
PSU's Intensive English Language Program (IELP) offers 6 levels of English (ESL) instruction:
Level I - Introductory/low-beginner
Level E - Entry / high-beginner
Level 2 - Low intermediate
Level 3 - Intermediate
Level 4 - High-intermediate
Level 5 - Advanced
New students take a placement exam, given at the beginning of each term, that determines their appropriate level. The IELP offers 4 core skills-based courses, a variety of skill enhancement courses, and several special interest courses. Students in their first term of study are required to enroll in Introduction to University Life in place of the elective class. Students who enroll in the IELP for one term of study only may request a waiver of this requirement.
