Lamar University was established in 1923. LU offers 63 undergraduate, 47 master’s and nine doctoral degree programs. The university has more than 13,000 students from over 60 different countries enrolled in five academic colleges – Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Development, Engineering, Fine Arts and Communication.

The Lamar Language Institute (LLI) of Lamar University-Beaumont offers a comprehensive program to increase English language proficiency for persons whose first language is not English. The Institute offers a full-time (minimum of 20 hours per week) course at various proficiency levels. Students who are eligible to do so may enroll for part-time study. Immigration status determines this eligibility. Small classes allow ample opportunity for individual participation. Classes in: Writing; Reading; Listening/Speaking; Conversation; Vocabulary; Pronunciation. Emphasis is in effective & fluent communication.
