This institution was founded in Jonesboro in 1909 by the Arkansas General Assembly as a regional agricultural training school. Now the Arkansas State University consists of the following departments: English & Philosophy; Criminology, Sociology & Geography; Political Science; History; Heritage Studies (Ph.D. program); and Languages. The school is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, as well as 18 specialized accrediting organizations. In addition, the university holds membership in numerous national organizations which support the highest educational standards. The Jonesboro campus enrollment is 18,941.

Intensive English six level program is designed to prepare non-native English speakers for both graduate and undergraduate studies in the United States. The school operates on 5 week sessions, and conducts 9 sessions per calendar year. Most of the students enter at level two and after one year of study are prepared to enter the university. Successful completion of this program fulfills the language requirements of ASU, and students can easily make the transfer into Arkansas State University. Intensive English provides 20 hours per week tutoring.
