The English Language Institute (ELI) is Lakeland College's intensive English program, offering full-time ESL courses covering all language skill areas. The purpose of the ELI is to prepare non-native speakers of English to be successful students in American college programs.

ELI student takes 18 hours of English classes. The schedule includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and TOEFL preparation. Students learn about American culture inside and outside of the classroom, and they have constant opportunities to practice their English as they interact with Americans in the residence hall, cafeteria, library, at sporting events, and in every other part of the college experience.

The number of semesters to study in the ELI depends on student’s initial English proficiency level and the amount of effort he/she puts forth as they study. Most beginning and low-intermediate students need two semesters of intensive English study before taking academic classes, while high-intermediate and advanced students usually need only one semester. The English Language Institute provides 14-week semester programs to familiarize students with American culture and customs as they learn English.
