Washburn University was established in February 1865. WUn offers more than 200 programs leading to certification, associate, bachelor, master's and juris doctor degrees through the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of Applied Studies, Business, Law and Nursing. The school's broadly-based liberal arts and professional education programs are enhanced by the tradition of an interactive relationship between campus and community. The school’s total enrollment is 6,545. It is rated seventh in the Midwest among public master’s level universities in the 2009 America’s Best Colleges rankings issued by U.S. News and World Report. This is the ninth consecutive year Washburn has earned a top 10 rating. WU has been continuously accredited or approved by the Higher Learning Commission: A Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1941.

Participants:

Washburn University's Intensive English Program (IEP) is a section of the Office of International Programs. The program is a series of English classes developed to assist international students in the need of improving their English skills before being accepted into a degree program of the University, and area residents, whose native language is not English, to improve their ability to interact in the community and on the job. Four class topics are covered in the program: Grammar & Structure, Speaking & Understanding, Reading Comprehension, and Academic Writing. There are three levels of each class. Classes follow the University semester schedule and meet 4 hours per week, for 15-16 weeks.

Students can also utilize the Writing Center and tutoring sponsored by IEP. The tutoring is free of charge to the students. A full-time student typically takes 12 hours (four courses of 3 credit hours each). In addition, students have full access to other University services and facilities, such as computer and language labs, libraries and athletic events and facilities, free of charge.
