Howard Community College was founded 1966 as 14th of 16 Maryland community colleges. The School hosts credit students and more than 17,000 noncredit continuing education students.

Student to faculty ratio is 19:1. the University includes 148 full-time faculty; 404 part-time credit faculty; 119 part-time noncredit faculty, 423 nonteaching staff. 27 percent of full-time faculty hold doctorates.

Community ESL. These classes teach you basic, everyday English skills that you can use in the community:  Pre-Beginning Comprehensive; Beginning I Comprehensive; Beginning II Comprehensive; Intermediate I Comprehensive; Listening and Speaking for Pre-Beginners; Listening and Speaking for Beginners; English for Koreans; Beginning Reading and Writing; Sentence Skills, Everyday English, English at Home, English for Citizenship.

The Intensive ESL program provides academic, focused study in the specific skills area of reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.  Instruction moves at a faster pace than the community ESL classes. 

Business Professional Certificate Program. The business courses are taught by ESL teachers and teachers with business background.  Students can earn a Business Professional Certificate by completing any three of the following courses within one year: Advanced Pronunciation & Speech; Advanced Pronunciation Training; Advanced Oral Communication; English for Starting a Business; English for Business Communication; Improving English Pronunciation Online; Professional Writing
