The University of Maryland is ranked 11th among all public U.S. universities and 37th worldwide in a recent international survey, and it was named one of the top 15 "green universities" in the country. Intensive English Program is a non-credit program offered three times per year. The fall term (September to December) and the spring term (January to May) are each 14 weeks long. The summer session (late June to the early August) is seven weeks long. Classes meet daily, usually between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm, with 21 instructional hours and two hours of a structured extracurricular workshop per week.The Program has 5 levels ranging from beginning to advanced. In the program, students study grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking with a semi-integrated skills curriculum.

Semi-Intensive Program is an advanced course for international graduate and undergraduate students who have been conditionally admitted to the University of Maryland. Students who have not met the university language proficiency requirement are required to enroll in and successfully complete the course in their first semester on campus. The curriculum is designed to assist students in raising their proficiency levels in listening, speaking, reading, and writing so they can participate effectively in an academic setting. The course meets two hours per day, five days per week in the fall and spring semesters. It is not offered in summer.

English Pronunciation is a one-semester course for International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) who have taken the MEI ITA evaluation and placed into the course on the basis of their scores on this exam. The class meets two hours per day, two days per week during the fall and spring semesters (it is not offered in the summer.) While the course bears no credit, it is the equivalent of 2 credits (4 units). Tuition is $943.

Advanced Oral Communication Skills is a two-semester course for International Teaching Assistant. The class meets two hours per day, two days per week during the fall and spring semesters (it is not offered in summer). While the course bears no credit, it is the equivalent of 2 credits (4 units). Tuition is $1,253.

Advanced Writing for International Students is a course for international graduate students who have been conditionally admitted to the University of Maryland. Graduate students who have not met the university language proficiency requirement in writing are required to enroll in and to successfully complete the course in their first semester at UM. The course meets twice per week for two hours in fall and spring terms. It is not offered in summer. The course covers sentence writing, essay writing, introductions, conclusions, rhetorical styles, light grammar reviews, and proofreading and editing techniques.

MEI offers three short, part time courses at various times during the year: American English Pronunciation, Dynamic Discussions, and Writing in American English.

These courses are from five to eight weeks long and meet twice per week for two hours each session. They are scheduled after 3 pm for the convenience of those who work and can not take a lot of time away from their jobs. Part time courses are open to anyone in the UM community or the community-at-large, and there are no special admissions requirements. UM does not issue I-20s for part time courses.
