The University of Michigan was established in 1817. It has three campuses and enrolls more than 56,000 students. There are about 1,000 student organizations in the UM. The School offers 524 major buildings, 3,000 faculty and more than 8 million library volumes.


Participants:

English for Academic Purposes. Over 30 one-credit and two-credit courses comprise the curriculum in the fall and winter semesters, including advanced electives and discipline-specific courses, among them: Writing & Grammar; Reading & Vocabulary; Listening; Speaking & Interaction; Pronunciation; GSI; Discipline-Specific Courses.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses for undergraduates are credit-bearing and open to undergraduate nonnative English speakers. Students may be required to take courses depending on their placement test scores of may themselves choose to enroll in courses based on their needs.

Summer Programs:
The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program is a seven week noncredit program of intensive academic English. It is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who are proficient in English and who have been accepted to an English-speaking university for the fall term. The primary focus of the EAP program is on developing the academic language skills necessary to effectively participate in an academic setting. Students who are not attending the University of Michigan in the Fall term are expected to have minimum score of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL or 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL in order to be considered for admission. The EAP program provides approximately 20 hours of instruction per week.

The English for Business Studies (EBS) program is an intensive seven week English for Specific Purposes program for students who have been accepted to a competitive MBA program in the U.S. for the fall term. Students are expected to have a minimum score of 600 on the paper-based TOEFL or 100 on the Internet-based TOEFL in order to be considered for admission to the program. Classes are scheduled for at least 20 hours per week. The EBS program is committed to extending the students' use of English outside the classroom.

The English for Legal Studies (ELS) program is a seven week non-credit academic legal English program. It is designed for non-native speakers of English who have been accepted into a competitive U.S. law school, most typically for an LL.M program. The focus is on the language and academic skills needed to succeed in a rigorous LL.M program. Students who are not attending the University of Michigan in the Fall term are expected to have a minimum score of 580 on the paper-based TOEFL or 92 on the Internet-based TOEFL in order to be considered for admission. The ELS program provides approximately 20 hours of instruction per week. ELS also provides opportunities for students to become familiar with the American legal system and law school culture. mitted to extending the students' use of English beyond the classroom.
