MSSU was founded in 1937. The school is accredited by the The Higher Learning Commission. It enrolls nearly 5,600 students from 37 states and 26 foreign countries. The University provides more than 100 degrees in various fields.

The International English Program welcomes students from all over the world who want to improve their English for a variety of reasons. Some students are at MSSU for a semester on exchange and take a course or two to study English; others are full time in the IEP, and still others attend an evening class after work. The IEP employs classroom based and natural English learning situations such as conversation partnerships, community activities, reading groups and language supported community volunteer work. 

Summer Programs in English - 2-3 Week summer programs of English Instruction at MSSU are available for overseas schools and universities upon request and agreement of terms. Missouri Southern requires advance planning of at least four months so that arrangements can be made for classrooms, instructional materials and housing.
