MSU was established in 1922. Today it enrolls around 6,095 students. The University offers 43 undergraduate and 24 graduate programs. Student/Faculty ratio is 19:1. Midwestern State University is accredited to award associate, baccalaureate, and master's degrees by: Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The core mission of the Intensive English Language Institute (IELI) at Midwestern State University is the provision of services to the university community of students, faculty, and administrators and the fostering of university goals through programmatic initiatives. 

The ESL classes are taught by a professional faculty with advanced degrees. For students enrolled in the regular IELI Program, the Institute provides ESL classes that seek to develop the four main language skills:
     - Grammar - study the rules that are used to construct written and spoken English;
     - Composition - learn how to write sentences, paragraphs, and essays (depending on the level) in English that are appropriate for academic study;
     - Reading - study to improve the ability to read written English and learn new vocabulary from context;
     - Listening and Speaking - improve your listening and speaking skills through directed listening and guided discussion.

Classes are one hour and 10 minutes in length and are held Monday through Thursday.
