RU was established in 1994. Today, it enrolls 3,102 undergraduates and 2,237 graduate students. Student-to-faculty ratio is of 5 to 1. The University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees.

University small size allows personal interaction between students and professors, while the eminent faculty foster the intellectual excitement of a major research university. Here, undergraduates at all levels participate in cutting-edge research with world-class faculty in the humanities, social sciences, engineering and natural sciences. Premier architecture and music professors enhance classroom experiences with their exceptional talent and artistry. Rice University education offers personal involvement and excellence in programs that prepare graduates for a changing world.

Participants:

Intensive English Program students at Rice University build practical English skills for general, academic or professional purposes. The program offers six sessions yearly. Each session lasts seven weeks. In one year, ESL students should be able to progress through the six-level core program. Classes meet four hours daily, five days per week.

In Levels 1-4, students concentrate on developing fundamental English skills in an interactive classroom setting. Course work emphasizes those skills necessary for effective oral and written communication. Instruction covers all areas of language development: practical vocabulary, basic language structures, and the essentials of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

In Levels 5-6, students continue to develop fluency and accuracy. Students enroll in one course focusing on comprehensive skills, and in a second class that enables them to expand their skills in academic or non-academic areas. University-bound students enroll in a course that emphasizes skill areas such as academic writing, note taking and oral presentation skills. Students with a more general focus take a communication skills course that concentrates on current issues or cultural aspects of American life.
