Ouachita was founded in 1886. Currently, it enrolls up to 1450 students. Small classes are provided and student-to-faculty ratio is approximately 13:1. The University offers undergraduate programs of study in the liberal arts. OBU is affiliated with the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Participants:

English as a Second Language Program offers 3 levels of English - Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, and students at all levels are welcome. It is preferable for students to have a TOEFL score before arrival.  However, each semester OBU offers and In-House TOEFL test to any new International students without TOEFL scores. 6 hours of deferred degree credit will be awarded to any student on successful completion of the ESL courses at the Advanced level. Each student will have a minimum of 12 hours of basic class work in Reading, Writing, Listening /Speaking, and Grammar. A further 9 hours include courses in Pronunciation, American Culture/History, Language Lab, and a sport of your choice.  ESL students may also audit one academic class of choice per semester. Classes are generally very small - 3-8 students per class for maximum learning and involvement.

The following courses are offered each semester: Reading (3 hours per week); Writing (3 hours); Listening/Speaking (3 hours); Grammar (3 hours ); American Culture ( 2 hours - travel included on occasions); Pronunciation - (1 hour with a personal tutor); Computer Lab- (3 hours); Language Lab - (3 hours).
