The UA was founded in 1870.The School enrolls 6,000 students representing 44 U.S. states and 79 foreign countries. The University is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges & Schools and 35 professional accrediting agencies.


Participants:

The English Language Institute (ELI) offers high-quality instruction in English as a second language (ESL).

English for Academic Purposes Program. For students who are a citizen of another country, a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident and are looking for an intensive language learning experience, the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program is a good decision. This Program is designed for people who plan to earn a university degree in the United States, it focuses on the English skills required for success in university coursework. Full-time students in the EAP program study for 20 hours a week in daytime noncredit courses that address four areas of English: reading, writing, listening comprehension, and grammar/speaking. Applicants from other countries will be issued SEVIS I-20 travel documents so that they can get an F-1 student visa for entry to the U.S.

Community and Corporate ESL Program. Specifically designed for nonnative English speakers living and working in Northeast Ohio, the Community and Corporate ESL (CCESL) Program offers two services: private tutoring on campus or at home; consulting for editing, resume writing, language assessment and more.

The U-ADEPT Testing Program. The University of Akron Developed English Proficiency Test (the U-ADEPT) assesses the speaking ability of prospective international teaching assistants at The University of Akron and determines their readiness to provide classroom-related services in their graduate departments.
