Xavier University was founded in 1831. Today, it enrolls 6,646 students totally, including 3,961 undergraduates. Its three colleges offer 78 undergraduate majors, 43 minors and 11 graduate programs. Xavier University has been recognized for the past several years as one of the nation's best Midwestern colleges and universities by US News and World Report. The Office of International Student Services provides students with arrival assistance, immigration advising, adjustment and personal assistance, as well as programs and activities. Student-to-faculty ratio is 12:1.

The ESL Program provides intensive English language instruction and academic training for international students who intend to enter American universities or improve their ability to use English for professional purposes. The Xavier University intensive English program meets professional standards in the field of ESL, and holds institutional memberships in The American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP) and The Association of International Educators (NAFSA). The ESL program follows the academic calendar at Xavier University, which is based on a semester system. Semesters average 16 weeks in length. Fall Semester begins in late August and ends in mid-December. Spring Semester begins in early January and ends in early May. A 12-week summer term is available from late May to early August.
