ESL courses enhance the learning process and provide an avenue for conditional admission to the State University of New York College at Oneonta when while providing supplemental ESL work necessary for transition and readiness for undergraduate performance. Courses are determined by placement test - required of all international students upon arrival – or where entry TOEFL scores are not as strong as they should be for full admission. The College offers two courses in the fall and spring semesters and bear college credit.

English as a Foreign Language I - 3 s.h. This course is designed to help foreign students improve their command of the English language and focus on academic reading comprehension, writing, listening and speaking skills. Emphasis is on reading at the college level. Class sizes are small and focused on reinforcing the skills necessary to perform well in the College level course COMP 100 – Composition.

English as a Foreign Language II - 3 s.h. This course is designed to further improve English language skills, building vocabulary, effective writing strategies, reading comprehension, improving listening and speaking abilities, and presentation skills. The course focuses on reinforcing skills necessary to perform well in the College level course COMP 100 – Composition.
