SUNY at Buffalo was founded in 1846. It enrolls around 28,190 students. The University offers 83 undergraduate, 133 master’s, 78 doctoral degrees and 4 professional programs.


Participants:

The Intensive English Program offers 25 hours of class instruction each week in all skill areas. The IEP meets the specific language needs of students, particularly those preparing for study at a U.S. college or university. Classes are small and are taught by highly qualified faculty. Special classes and extracurricular activities increase students' opportunities for learning and developing their skills. IEP students seeking admission to the University at Buffalo or another U.S. college or university receive academic advisement and assistance with applications. Fall/Spring - $3,200

English as a second Language Program is designed to assist international and domestic students at UB who are enrolled in degree programs and whose first language is not English to develop the language skills necessary to succeed in their academic programs.

Courses for undergraduate students:
- Written English. Satisfies the university's Writing requirement for undergraduate students whose First or dominant Language is other than English. Is required during the first semester for conditionally admitted students only. Written English I - focuses on paragraph and essay writing and includes a review of English grammar. Written English II - focuses on essay and research paper writing, citation, and critical reading.
- Spoken English - is required during the first semester for conditionally admitted students only. Focuses on individual and group presentations, American idioms, pronounciation and communication skills for effective small-group interaction.

Courses for undergraduate students:

- Communication for International Teaching Assistants. Focuses on basic teaching skills. Provides questioning and negotiation techniques for improving interaction between TAs and students.
- Spoken English is open to graduate students.
- Written English and Reading I/II. Both are also open to graduate students.

The Evening Program of the English Language Institute offers a variety of part-time courses suited to the specific needs and schedules of various English language learners. Those wishing to improve their language ability and gain confidence speaking English in social and business situations will find a course to fit their needs in the ELI Evening Program. The Evening Program offers courses specially designed to increase participants' fluency and comprehensibility in English.

- Advanced Communication. Tuition: $325.00 - 12 weeks = 24 classes
- Advanced Writing & Grammar. Tuition: $325.00 - 12 weeks = 24 classes
- American English Proninciation. Tuition: $195.00 - 7 weeks = 14 classes
