Participants:

General ESL
The noncredit ESL program offers seven levels of ESL instruction. Students take a CASAS placement test during registration and are placed in one of the seven levels based on their listening and reading skills. The program levels chart provides recommended entry level CASAS scores and descriptions for the seven levels of ESL instruction.

Vocational ESL
MiraCosta College’s noncredit Vocational English as a Second Language program at the Community Learning Center offers courses that will help students explore career options, prepare to get a job, improve their English skills for the current job, or study for a career.

Students may enroll in the afternoon or evening classroom course in which they practice English for getting a job, communicating in the workplace, working as part of a team, and completing important speaking, reading and writing tasks and projects related to work.

An open-entry, self-paced VESL lab is a convenient class option for students who may not be able to attend a regular course due to schedule conflicts. In this class, students study independently, with the guidance of an instructor, at his/her own speed.

Citizenship
Citizenship instruction is offered in the Community Learning Lab. This open entry course allows students to have a flexible schedule and personalized instruction. Students are required to attend a 30 minute explanation of the class.
They work at their own pace when the Community Learning Lab is open. They complete individualized citizenship assignments using computers, videos and instructional packets.

Distance Learning

MiraCosta College has a new program where students can study English at home. They may study with friends and family. Students check out videos and buy or borrow a book. A teacher will review the work and help with any problems. The teacher will be happy to meet with students individually or in small group.

Saturday Classes
ESL students have the opportunity to enroll in Saturday school. There are two levels of English language instruction from 9:00am-12:00pm. Classes meet 20 hours per week. The cost of the program is $1,875 for an 8-week session.
