Santa Monica College was opened in 1929 with just 153 students. The amount of students, currently enrolled to the school has grown to approximately 30,000 and the current offerings are held in more than 80 fields of study. There are 2,500 international students from more than 100 countries in SMC.

Intensive English Program 
The Intensive English program offers 20 hours per week of noncredit content-based English instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. The Intensive English Program is designed to matriculate students to the undergraduate program by improving their English proficiency through extensive reading. The writing, listening, and speaking classes will provide relevant learning activities based on extensive reading.

Students admitted to the Intensive English Program must attend an orientation. An assessment test will be administered by the English teachers. Students will be provided information on immigration issues, medical insurance, public safety and a campus tour will follow. Tuition will be collected at that time. The orientation seminar fee is $50.
