Academics

Western Michigan University is a research university with high research activity. It provides more than 200 degree programs, including doctoral level, through 7 academic colleges. WMU includes the following degree-granting colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Aviation, the Haworth College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the College of Fine Arts and the College of Health and Human Services.

Athletics

The Western Michigan Broncos is a team representing Western Michigan University. Michigan Broncos go in for men's baseball, basketball, football, soccer and tennis; and women's basketball, cross-country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, track and field, and volleyball. The men's hockey team competes in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The facilities of the team include Waldo Stadium (football), University Arena (men's and women's basketball, volleyball), Lawson Arena (hockey), Hyames Field (baseball), Sorensen Courts/West Hills Athletic Club (men's and women's tennis), Ebert Field (softball), and Kanley Track (women's track and field). The soccer teams compete at the WMU Soccer Complex located near the Parkview Campus. The capstone of the facilities roster at WMU is the recently completed Donald Seelye Athletic Center.

Campus

Western Michigan University offers its students on campus housing. Main Campus offer larger rooms with smaller communities that are close to academic buildings, library, Bernhard Center and Recreation Center. Residence Halls support about 5,000 students. They can take advantage of hall activities, leadership opportunities, staff available 24 hours, Dining halls and many additional conveniences. The Valleys provides rooms where two rooms share a bathroom, close to the Haworth College of Business, intramural fields and Goldsworth Valley pond. Big Three and Big Four offers community-style living where each floor shares a bathroom, some 3- and 4-person rooms. Little Three, restricted to upper-class students, offers private bathroom or suite-style setup . Spindler Hall offers 80 unfurnished rooms, and residents have access to community bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry facilities for doctoral, graduate, senior, and non-traditional students at least 23 years of age. To be eligible to live on campus, individual must be a WMU student enrolled in at least one credit hour. During One-Stop hours only, semester and yearly stickers may not be purchased at Parking Services. Only temporary permits and special parking permits may be obtained at Parking Services during this time. Residence hall dining rooms are open from breakfast through dinner. Students can eat as much they like from the wide array of choices, including a variety of specialty menus. WMU Dining Services offers options designed to provide a wide variety of healthy food choices to the WMU community. Individual meal plans are easily purchased online for use at the various dining halls. As for the parking, students have to buy semester permits or yearly permits at Parking Services. During One-Stop hours only, semester and yearly stickers may not be purchased at Parking Services. Only temporary permits and special parking permits may be obtained at Parking Services during this time. Faculty and staff can register in person at Parking Services or apply online.

Facilities

WMU has a great number of different labs and centers that will help provide students with better understanding of learning materials. Students are taught in Arts & Sciences Labs, BCC Lab, Faculty Tech. Center, Fine Arts Labs, Digital Img & Prt Lab, HCOB Labs, HHS Labs, Industrial Design Lab, Kohrman Labs, Lee Honors College Lab, Mallinson Institute Lab, METL Lab, Parkview Campus Labs, Psychology Lab, ROTC Lab, Sangren Labs, Student Rec Center Lab, Student Tech. Lab, UCC Lab. WMU offers a great library resource for better quality of students' studying.

Health & Safety

Police Department is committed to providing a safe and secure environment that is conducive to the education of the students by protecting life and property, and by providing assistance to all persons in need, in a manner that promotes confidence in the department throughout the diverse campus community. Police Department is divided into three divisions: 1) Patrol Division (investigating crimes, investigating traffic accidents, responding to emergencies, enforcing traffic laws and parking regulations, inspecting the security of buildings, coordinating special events, operating a communications center); 2) Detective Division (conducts detailed investigations into criminal complaints and prepares criminal cases for prosecution.); 3) Community Policing Division (forges partnerships between the police and members of the University community). WMU offers a variety of insurance plans. Providing a wide variety of insurance plans, the goal of the university is to bring students peace of mind by providing quality products and excellent customer service.

Students

Western Michigan offers a wide range of activities and student organizations for its students. There are currently over 300 registered student organizations that students may join, such as the following: Bass Fishing at Western Michigan, Alliance for Socioeconomic Justice, Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Xi Delta, American Humanics Student Association, Ebony Vision, Equestrian Team, Foreign Film Club, Habitat for Humanity, Inter Fraternity Council, Kappa Delta Pi, Management Student Organization, National Residence Hall Honorary, Sigma Alpha Iota, Sigma Tau Delta, Students for Life WMU, Think Tank, Worklight Improv. Team, Young Life.

Location

WMU offers off-campus housing. WMU Apartments are conveniently placed close to campus. Apartment rent includes most utilities, cable television services, and an apartment parking sticker. There are furnished and unfurnished apartments at Elmwood, Goldsworth Valley, and Stadium Drive. Individuals are eligible to live in WMU Apartments if they are enrolled in WMU at least half-time, or are a WMU employee or alumnus. Kalamazoo is a great town there is a great night life downtown which is not far at all.

Alumni & Post-Grad

The WMU Alumni Association, together with WMU Career Network, create the WMU Alumni Career Network. It provides alumni with the resources and tools needed for their personal career development. In order to help graduates with taking the first steps in their career development journey it has created a Career Planning and Job Search checklist to help them track their progress.

Jobs & Internship

Students of the University are eligible to be involved into the internships in the U.S. with outdoor centers, conservation corps, resorts, national parks, summer camps, etc. Humanitarian and environmental Internship opportunities also available in many countries around the world. The Federal Career Intern Programs listing provides information about federal agencies, programs and their web links to assist students in job searching federal intern programs. The following internships are also available for students: Detroit Intern., MI Internships, Intern in Michigan, Southwest Michigan Talent Network, U.S. State Department Internships. Career Advising Services will help students to find a job, or apply to graduate school.
