Athletics

The Western Kentucky University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics provides a comprehensive, high quality education for student-athletes and serves the university community, alumni, and friends through success and distinction within an environment of uncompromising integrity. The men's athletic teams are called the Hilltoppers and the women's teams known as the Lady Toppers. Big Red is their mascot. Men's sports are the following: baseball, football, basketball, cross country, golf, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field. Women are involved in the following: basketball, cross country, golf, soft ball, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball.

Campus

The Department of Housing and Residence Life, in partnership with the student and the university community, will provide a premier living/learning experience that assures student success. Everyone interested in living on campus needs to complete a Housing Agreement. Freshman and Sophomores are required to live on campus. Exemptions for this include students who: are married, have dependent children, are commuting from parent's or guardian's permanent address (50 miles or less), are military veterans of 181 days or more, are 21 years of age or older, and special circumstances. Each bedroom has a phone jack and students just need to provide the telephone. Each room has a data port that will provide the same services that are available in the computer labs. These services include: free, unlimited internet access, e-mail, WKU's on-line library catalog, reference CD-ROM, a variety of software for word processing, spreadsheets and databases.

Facilities

At Student Technology Centers WKU provides open computer labs for all students. The Main Campus has six locations of such centers. STC labs are equipped with the latest hardware, software, scanners, and laser printing. One location, in the Mass Media and Technology Hall, is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week while classes are in session. WKU has great libraries. Library faculty and staff have been working hard to provide participants with various information resources, from print and electronic library materials to a value-added web directory; and from research guides to information of particular interest to WKU and community constituents, such as the Kentucky Information in Cyberspace and resources on the Kentucky Education Reform Act. The Kentucky Library and Museum, a valuable component of Western University Libraries, has been digitizing some of its collections and making them available to the public via the Internet.

Health & Safety

WKU Health Services is a full service primary care center created to providing WKU students, faculty, staff, alumni, and their families with quality medical care. There are many physicians and specialties. Physicians also have admitting privileges at both The Medical Center and Greenview Hospital. The Western Kentucky University Police Department is a professional full service agency. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Officers of this department have police powers, like arrest powers, under Kentucky Revised Statute 164.975. The WKU Police Department consists of: 28 sworn officers, 10 administrative staff, 10 student police Explorers, and student office employees.

Students

WKU provides a wide range of leadership opportunities for students that are available to students through the 250+ registered student organizations on campus. There is a wide range to choose from: African Students Union, American Constituency of Healthcare Executives-Student Association, Campus Crusade for Christ, College Democrats, Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Omega Phi Alpha, Kappa Sigma, Hillvue Heights University Ministry, Resident Staff Association, Society of Professional Journalists. The Greek community is committed to building lifelong leadership skills through the promotion of academic excellence, social responsibility, and involvement in the community and on campus. Students diversity is represented through areas such as race, gender, ethnicity, language, religion, sexual orientation, geographic location, abilities or disabilities, and socioeconomic status.

Location

Graduate students and students who are over 21 years old have the option to live off campus. The university offers several helpful websites and phone numbers when looking for off-campus housing. At WKU there is always something going on. There are lots of dances, get-togethers, and other activities that go on. There are a few clubs close to campus that students hang out at that usually have concerts and things like that which is lots of fun. The WKU shuttles run to pick up students and if it is after hours students can always ride with a friend or call the campus transportation services and they will get them where they need to go. WKU has a safe night life seen, very entertaining as well.

Alumni & Post-Grad

The Western Kentucky University Alumni Association is committed to enhancing and strengthening the Western Spirit. Thanks to an engaging mix of programs, services, activities, and events, alumni are encouraged to develop strong ties with each other and get reconnected with their alma mater. Affinity partners of Alumni Association provide a great opportunity for alumni to enjoy a beneficial service while supporting WKU. Graduates are offered several opportunities to participate, and services that are sure to please everyone.

Jobs & Internship

The Career Services Center is committed to assisting students and alumni in identifying and reaching their career and employment goals. It also helps employers access an educated and highly trained workforce, and to support faculty and staff in providing opportunities to increase student learning and skill development. Through WKU’s Internship Program, students combine academic studies with on-the-job experience in their career fields. Internship students will graduate with a strong academic foundation plus the practical background that employers want. Students will also know from experience that the profession they have chosen is right for them.
