The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada


The American Baptist Seminary of the West offers a Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Community Leadership (accredited by the Association of Theological Schools), a Master of Arts degree jointly with the GTU. Seminary curriculum involves learners in an interdisciplinary approach to biblical, historical, theological, and social–psychological disciplines covering a variety of religious and cultural areas of study.


Athletics is not available.


ABSW on campus housing offers a unique opportunity for community development beyond the classroom. Seminary currently owns two apartment buildings (Gray and Bratcher) located on the seminary campus. Apartments include one-bedroom, two-bedroom, studio and studio-plus and are unfurnished. Washers and dryers are available in a community laundry room located under Bratcher Apartment building. Parking spaces may be available to residents for a monthly fee.


The Flora Lamson Hewlett Library includes the vast resources for the purpose of providing assistance for teaching, learning, and research in the disciplines of religion and theology. The library has more than 450,000 volumes, 1200 periodical subscriptions, and 292,000 micro-forms, audio visual materials and other helpful resources. The library is considered one of the largest theological libraries in the USA. The building of the library includes a central reading room, study areas, computer lab, and library staff.

Health & Safety

The Graduate Theological Union and participating member schools and institutions offer a medical insurance plan designed to provide students with complete medical coverage. ABSW health insurance plan is available to students enrolled for at least six or more credits per semester.


American Baptist Seminary of the West is a multi-cultural and multi-racial center for theological education committed to preparing men and women for leadership in the 21st century church ministries. Enrollment minority includes 44% African-American and 6% Hispanic.


Every Monday evening the community comes together for worship and a shared meal before evening classes: this holds ABSW together as a community. Commuting students and those living on campus have an opportunity to share and get to know each other in a spirit of Christian family.

Alumni & Post-Grad

The American Baptist Seminary of the West alumni are serving the Church in different capacities around the world. Seminary alums are lifelong learners. ABSW offers the Pastoral Leadership Conference and several elective courses for continuing education credit to help meet this desire for on going education.

Jobs & Internship

Middler internships are not limited to ministry work in congregations. ABSW students have interned in a variety of settings, including hospice ministry, non-profit agencies, police departments, hospitals, and community centers. Seminary is open to innovative ideas for our students' contextual education ministry sites and it also work with dozens of local churches, from many denominations, who are eager to have ABSW students intern with their congregations.ABSW periodically is contacted regarding open job positions.
