Winston-Salem State University is ranked among the nationís top institutions in providing high quality, baccalaureate-level higher education to African-American students. It offers over 40 undergraduate programs and 10 graduate programs. The main goal of undergraduate and graduate studies at Winston-Salem State University is to provide eligible students with a superior education required for the full development of scholarly and professional capacities at the undergraduate and graduate degree level in selected academic programs.


Varsity Men's teams include: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis. As for the women's teams, they are in the following: bowling, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, softball, tennis, volleyball. Its colors are red and white and the university mascot is a ram. The University is committed to maintain control of its athletics programs through the responsible administrators, faculty, and institutional bodies; to educate coaches, staff, student-athletes and other individuals involved with the athletics program in their institutional responsibilities under the rules; to develop operating systems within athletics department and the University that provide guidance in how to work within the rules; and to discover and report any violations of rules that occur.


The Winston-Salem State University supports the academic mission of the University by offering opportunities for individual and collective growth to students who live on campus. By providing facilities that guarantees students living in secure and comfortable environment, the Department of Housing and Residence Life promotes the individual and academic growth of learners. Winston Salem State University's Dining Service offers a wide variety of dining options, from a quick bite on the go to a casual sit-down with classmates and friends. Students are offered a broad range of delicious food offerings including national brands (Subway and Java City) as well as unique in-house brands like fried chicken, authentic international cuisine. As for the parking: all parking areas of the University are zoned, reserved, and/or restricted. Parking is prohibited except in lots, streets, and areas indicated. Legal parking at all times is restricted to spaces marked for parking. All parked vehicles must display a WSSU parking permit appropriate for the zone where parked.


With a help of current collection, electronic services and via interlibrary loan, the university library supports and improves academic programs. The staff instructs and assists users with all aspects of library services to foster and instill life long learning. Supporting adjuvant services and equipment are maintained. The staff guarantees resources, archives university records and related documents. The Academic Computer Center is located on the lower level of the E. J. Jones Computer Science Building. The computer center complex serves as a major resource for student research, academic work and computer skills development. The computer center provides students with an environment of computer resources and services for their use during all academic sessions.

Health & Safety

Winston-Salem State University Police provides students with safety and crime prevention tips, crime statistics, information on WSSU policy on certain topics, as well as information on campus resources for dealing with criminal, legal, safety issues, and campus emergencies. The Police Department strives to develop partnerships with WSSU students, faculty and staff members, in such a way providing services designed to enhance the personal safety of members of the campus community at the highest level 24 hours a day. The WSSU campus is a pedestrian friendy setting that is relatively crime free.


Greek life of the university is guided by the following organization: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc., Omega Psi Phi, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. As for the other students organizations - there are many of them in the University. To mane few of them: Basketball Traveling Club, Club Latino, Commuter Student Association (CSA), Impact Movement Inc., Motorsports Management Club, Nontraditional Adult Student Organization (NASO), Project Strengthen, Registered Organization Council (ROC), Talent In Motion (T.I.M.). Winston-Salem State University's campus is located at the eastern gateway to Winston-Salem's growing downtown area. The University, known as "The City of the Arts," is home to a broad range of visual and performing arts, live music venues, several museums and museum shops, theaters, and nightlife offerings for everyone. The University Office of Housing and Residence Life assists current and newly-admitted students, who are not eligible for on-campus housing or are not interested in WSSU student housing. Being a student that lives off campus is different from being a residence hall student. Living off campus presents new challenges and opportunities for growth and change, it plays a large role in academic and social success at WSSU.

Alumni & Post-Grad

Winston-Salem State University National Alumni Association provides alumni with an opportunity to share their knowledge and to forge a lifelong relationship with their Alma Mater. In Alumni Relations increase involvement and support of the alumni population. More and more alums are devoting a portion of their energies and their finances to the continued growth and expansion of their Alma Mater.

Jobs & Internship

The Office of Career Services offers a centralized, comprehensive career center by providing high quality programs and resources to all Winston-Salem State University students and alumni. Students are engaged in career exploration, and presenting professional development programs that enhance student readiness to enter the marketplace or pursue additional educational opportunities. The this mission is accomplished through maintaining quality standards and productive collaborations with internal and external partners. WSSU provides internship for its students. The university strive to offer career-related work experience of limited duration to provide students with an opportunity to gain experience before they graduate while earning credit hours. The student works in a professional setting under the supervision of at least one practicing professional. Students who do internships may work during the fall, spring or summer terms.
